These are approved Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services filings, pulled from the public SERFF system — not estimates. Every figure above links to its filing by tracking number. Because Michigan has the highest premiums in the country, even a small percentage change is real money.
State Farm leads the cuts
State Farm, Michigan’s largest auto insurer, cut −4.9% on roughly 1.3 million policyholders. Progressive cut −2.8%, and Auto-Owners and Allstate made smaller trims. On the country’s most expensive book, a −4.9% State Farm cut is a larger dollar move than a bigger percentage would be almost anywhere else.
Small moves and regional raises
Most of the market barely moved, but a few regional carriers went up: Frankenmuth raised +4.6% (against an +11.3% indication, so more may follow), Bristol West +2.1%, and The Hanover +0.9%. In a high-premium state, a modest raise from your carrier while State Farm cuts is exactly the situation where switching can save real money.
One Michigan caveat: since the 2019 no-fault reform, your premium depends heavily on the PIP medical coverage level you chose (unlimited, $500k, $250k, $50k or opt-out). A statewide-average rate change applies across those tiers, so your actual price and change can differ more than in other states. Comparing carriers at your PIP level is the only apples-to-apples read.
Your change isn’t the statewide average
Every figure above is a book-wide average; carriers reprice individually on your ZIP, vehicle, age, history and PIP choice. A carrier that cut on average may still have raised your profile. The only way to know where you land — and whether a competitor is cheaper — is to compare for your exact situation.
The one stat that matters: Michigan has the country’s highest premiums, so even a small rate gap between carriers is real money — compare yours. Compare every carrier for your exact ZIP →
What to do with your renewal
Approved changes apply at renewal, not mid-term, and usually reach new customers first. Your renewal shows your carrier’s price for your coverage and PIP level; it doesn’t tell you what a competitor would charge. On the most expensive book in the country, running your ZIP against every carrier is worth doing before you renew — it’s free and takes a couple of minutes.
