If your Allstate renewal in Virginia climbed, here is the source: Allstate filed for a rate increase (SERFF ALSE-134970309) and the Virginia Bureau of Insurance approved +3.0%. These are approved filings from the public SERFF system — not estimates — and each links to its filing.
Allstate asked for +10% and got +3%
Filings separate the indicated change (what the actuaries said the loss data justified) from the approved change. Allstate indicated +10.0% and took +3.0% — less than a third of its own number. That leaves roughly seven points of indicated need unfilled, and carriers refile to close a gap that size, so a Virginia Allstate customer should plan on continued increases. (Earlier in the year Allstate had cut part of its Virginia book −5.0%; this +3.0% is the most recent move.)
The +3% ranges +18% to −16%
A statewide average hides the spread. Allstate’s own filing reports the change ran from about +18% to about −16% by driver — so inside a “+3% average,” some Virginia drivers were raised double digits and others were cut. Where you land depends on your ZIP, vehicle, age, claims and coverage, which is why the headline can’t tell you whether your increase is reasonable.
The one stat that matters: Allstate indicated +10% in Virginia but took +3% — the unfilled gap tends to return, and the range ran +18% to −16% by driver. Compare every carrier for your exact ZIP →
Meanwhile, Virginia’s biggest insurer cut rates
While Allstate nudged up, State Farm — the largest auto insurer in Virginia — cut −6.5% on roughly 1.43 million policyholders, after an earlier −4.0% cut. USAA trimmed −1.3% and part of Nationwide’s book came down −5.0%. Some of the biggest Virginia books moved down — a strong reason to see what a competitor would charge you today.
What to do with your renewal
Approved changes apply at renewal, not mid-term, and usually reach new customers first. Your renewal shows Allstate’s price for your coverage; it does not tell you what State Farm, USAA or Erie would charge for the same coverage. With a large indicated gap still unfilled, running your ZIP against every carrier is worth doing now — it’s free and takes a couple of minutes.
